Plan Layout and Mark Excavation

Stake the basin location at the base of the planned waterfall. Mark the waterfall head position at the top. Run a string line between them along the planned stream path. Use spray paint or a garden hose to mark the stream width and basin footprint on the ground. Confirm the total vertical rise from basin floor to spillway outlet — this is your static head height for pump sizing.

Check the site for level: use a spirit level on two stakes with a string line run across the feature footprint. A slope of more than 3% across the feature footprint will require grading before installation. Confirm the GFCI outlet location and measure cord distance. Plan your electrical conduit route for the pump cord before excavation begins — running conduit after the basin and stone are placed is the most common "I wish I had done this earlier" regret from first-time builders.

Waterfall head area: Build up the waterfall head area using excavated soil or imported compacted fill, creating a stable mound at the elevation required for your planned waterfall height. The spillway box will sit on this mound — it must be stable, compacted, and level side-to-side.

  • Remove all sharp rocks, roots, and debris from all excavated surfaces
  • Do not compact the stream channel floor — leave it natural for liner conformance
  • Slope the waterfall mound forward 1–2 degrees toward the stream to ensure water flows over the spillway lip rather than pooling behind it
Install the Basin Vault

Add 2–3 inches of compacted 3/4-inch gravel to the basin hole floor. Tamp firmly — this drainage base prevents vault settling after installation. Set the basin vault on the gravel, centered in the hole. Confirm the vault is level in all four directions using a spirit level across the top grate surface. Adjust gravel depth as needed to achieve level.

Lay Underlayment and EPDM Liner
⏱ 45–90 minutes

Underlayment first: Drape 8-oz geotextile underlayment loosely across the entire excavation — basin hole, stream channel, and waterfall face. Overlap seams by at least 12 inches. Do not pull the underlayment tight; let it conform naturally to the terrain contours. Secure edges temporarily with stones while positioning the liner.

Liner installation: Unfold the EPDM liner on a warm day — above 60°F if possible; cold liner is stiffer and creates more wrinkles. Have both helpers hold the liner at opposite ends and lower the center down into the basin area first, then ease the fabric along the stream channel, working toward the waterfall head. Form neat accordion folds at inside corners rather than pulling the liner tight across them — stress at corners is where liner failures originate.

Basin overlap: Tuck the liner into the basin vault, overlapping all four vault walls by at least 6 inches. This overlap creates the continuous watertight path from the waterfall face down the stream channel and into the basin. Secure with the vault grate weighted temporarily.

  • Maintain a minimum 12-inch overlap on all stream edges — do not trim yet
  • The liner must overlap, not underlap, the basin vault rim on all sides
  • Work out wrinkles from the basin end upward toward the waterfall head — not the reverse
Install Pump, Check Valve, Tubing, and Spillway
⏱ 1–2 hours

Pump placement: Place the submersible pump in its protective pump vault cage and lower it into the basin vault. The pump vault cage keeps gravel and debris away from the impeller intake — a critical protection that extends pump life significantly.

Tubing run: Connect flexible PVC tubing to the pump outlet. Run the tubing up behind the waterfall face, keeping it beneath the liner wherever possible to conceal it. Minimize bends and use sweeping curves rather than sharp 90° elbows — each elbow adds friction resistance equivalent to approximately 1 foot of head height. Use the conduit sleeve if installed in Step 1.

Check valve installation: Install the check valve in the tubing run between the pump and the spillway, with the flow direction arrow pointing toward the spillway outlet. This is a non-negotiable component — without it, the entire tubing volume drains back to the basin on pump shutdown, causing overflow when the pump restarts and adding stress to the pump motor at each startup.

Spillway mounting: Mount the spillway box on the waterfall head mound. Use a torpedo level across the weir lip — it must be perfectly level side-to-side. Even a 1/4-inch tilt concentrates flow noticeably to the low side, making the waterfall look lopsided. Connect the tubing to the spillway inlet and confirm the connection is seated and clamped.

Step 6 — Rockwork and Finishing: Where DIY Becomes Art

Waterfall Face Stone Placement

Start with the largest flat-faced stone directly beneath the spillway outlet — this capstone receives the most water flow and sets the character of the entire falls. Use flat-bottomed stones that sit stable without wobbling; round stones shift under water pressure and foot traffic. Work from the spillway downward, setting stones in a descending step sequence with each stone overlapping the liner edge of the stone below it.

Apply black waterfall foam sealant between each stone on the waterfall face before placing the next stone above it. Foam fills the gaps that would otherwise allow water to seep behind the stone rather than flowing over its face. This single technique is the most impactful difference between a professional-looking waterfall and an amateur one — a well-foamed waterfall runs a full, even sheet of water across every stone face; an unfoamed one drips inconsistently and loses volume to hidden channels behind the rockwork.

Stream Edge Boulders

Set boulders along both stream channel edges to contain the flow and create visual depth. Vary stone sizes deliberately — alternate large, medium, and small stones rather than running similarly sized stones in a line. Use odd-numbered groupings of three or five at feature points; even numbers read as manufactured rather than natural.

Basin Area Finishing

Spread 3–4 inches of washed pea gravel over the basin grate, working outward from the center. Set feature boulders around the basin perimeter to frame the "disappearing" effect. Keep the pump vault access point clear — mark its location relative to a visible feature stone so you can locate it for future maintenance without disturbing the entire gravel surface.

Liner Trim and Edge Treatment

With all stone in final position, trim the liner edges leaving a 12-inch overlap tucked beneath edge stones on all sides. Never trim flush with the stream edge — water wicks through capillary action and will drain continuously at a flush-cut liner edge. The 12-inch underlap beneath edge stone is structural, not decorative.

Step 7 — First Fill, System Test, and Adjustment

The first fill and test is done before placing final stone — not after. Discovering a spillway level problem or a tubing leak is a 10-minute fix before stone is placed and a multi-hour disassembly job afterward.

  • Fill the basin with a garden hose until water is visible at the grate level. Add dechlorinator if using municipal water supply.
  • Power on the pump and observe water flowing up to the spillway and cascading down. Watch the spillway distribution — water should emerge evenly across the full spillway width. If flow concentrates to one side, the spillway is not level. Power off, adjust spillway box level, and retest before proceeding.
  • Watch basin water level as the system fills the stream channel and tubing. The level will drop noticeably as water fills the stream for the first time — top off until the system reaches equilibrium. This is the volume you'll need to top off periodically as evaporation takes its toll in summer.
  • Check all tubing connections for seepage at fittings and clamps. Hand-tighten any that show moisture.
  • Test the check valve by powering off the pump and observing the basin level — it should not drop more than 1–2 inches as the tubing empties slowly. A large level drop indicates the check valve is not functioning or is installed in the wrong direction.
  • Once satisfied with performance, complete final stone placement and trim liner to final dimensions.

First fill and system test — confirming even spillway distribution before placing final stone. This is the most important quality check in the entire installation and takes 15 minutes to do correctly.
