The liner is the only component of your pond that cannot be upgraded, replaced, or supplemented once the pond is full of water, rocks, and fish. The pump, filter, and lighting can all be swapped mid-season with minimal disruption. The liner cannot — a full drain, stone removal, and reinstallation typically takes a full weekend and costs the same as building the pond the first time.

Liner sizing errors fall into two categories. The first is calculating the liner dimensions without accounting for depth — treating the liner as if it only needs to cover the top surface area of the pond. This produces a liner that fits the bottom but runs out of material before reaching the edges, forcing a restart. Breaking Down Each Term

Pond Length and Pond Width: These are the surface water dimensions of your planned pond — the length and width at the waterline, not the footprint of the excavation. If your excavation has plant shelves around the perimeter (which it should), the surface water dimension is the inner dimension at the top of the shelf, not the outer edge of the excavation.

2 × Depth: The depth term is multiplied by two because the liner descends the full depth on one side of the pond and ascends the full depth on the opposite side. For a pond that is 2 feet deep, you need 2 feet of liner on the way down and 2 feet on the way up — 4 additional feet per dimension, applied independently to length and width. This is the term that first-time builders most commonly omit or halve.

+ 2 feet (the overlap allowance): This 2-foot addition provides 1 foot of liner extending beyond the pond edge on each side — material used to bury under edging stones, wrap around the skimmer faceplate, or tuck under the soil perimeter berm. One foot per side is the minimum. In complex builds with tall waterfalls or irregular shapes, use 1.5 feet per side (3 feet total) for added security.

The liner must cover the full depth on both sides of every dimension. A 10×8 ft pond at 2-foot depth needs 4 additional feet per dimension (2 ft down + 2 ft up), plus 2 ft total overlap — giving a 16×14 ft liner requirement.

Worked Examples: Step-by-Step Pond Liner Calculations

Apply the formula to three common pond scenarios so you can see each term in context before using the size chart below.

Example 1 — Small Backyard Pond (8×11 ft, 2 ft deep)

Sizing Pond Liner for Waterfalls and Streams

Waterfall and stream liners are sized and purchased separately from the main pond liner. They cannot be sized from the same sheet without seaming — and while EPDM seaming is reliable and permanent, calculating a single liner that covers both the pond and an attached stream creates unnecessary complexity and usually results in an awkwardly large liner that is difficult to handle during installation.

Stream Liner Sizing Formula

For a stream or waterfall run, the liner dimensions are calculated independently:

The 2-foot addition to stream length accounts for the liner overlap needed at the top of the stream where it connects to the biofilter housing — you need this extra material to wrap up and behind the biofilter faceplate for a watertight seal. At the pond end, the stream liner overlaps into the pond liner by approximately 6 inches and is tucked beneath it to direct water into the pond without escaping under the stream edge.

Koi Pond Liner Sizing: Why Depth Changes Everything

Koi ponds require a minimum depth of 3 feet — 2 feet at the plant shelves around the perimeter, with a central zone of 3 to 4 feet. The depth term in the formula is the maximum depth of the pond, not the average. For a koi pond with a 3-foot central zone, use 3 feet in the formula for every dimension — even though the plant shelf areas are shallower.

This is not conservative padding. A 3-foot-deep koi pond with a 12×16 ft surface requires a 20×24 ft liner (see chart). A builder who estimates based on average 2-foot depth and buys a 16×20 liner will run out of material 2 feet short on every side when the liner is draped into the 3-foot deep center zone. The pond cannot be filled, the liner cannot be extended, and the entire build restarts with a new liner purchase.

Never use average depth in the liner formula — always use maximum depth. The liner must reach the deepest point in the pond from every direction. If your pond has a 3-foot deep zone in the center and 12-inch plant shelves around the perimeter, the liner calculation uses 3 feet for depth, not 2 feet or 1.5 feet. The plant shelves are shallower, but the liner descends to the maximum depth before ascending the opposite side — and that full descent-and-ascent path is what the formula must account for.

EPDM vs. PVC Pond Liner: Which Material Is Right?

The answer for any permanent pond is 45-mil EPDM. This is not a matter of significant debate among professional pond builders — PVC liners have a use case (temporary installations, raised container ponds, situations where liner replacement is anticipated within 3–5 years) but they are not suitable for permanent in-ground pond construction. Here is why.

PVC liners contain plasticizers — chemical additives that make the material flexible at room temperature. These plasticizers leach out of the PVC over time, particularly under UV exposure and elevated temperatures. As they leach, the liner becomes progressively less flexible, then brittle, then prone to cracking under the weight of pond water and stone. This process typically becomes visible within 3–7 years of installation. The replacement cost — drain, remove stone, remove old liner, install new liner, reinstall stone, refill — is typically greater than the cost of simply buying the 45-mil EPDM liner from the start.

EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) does not contain plasticizers. Its flexibility is inherent to the polymer chemistry rather than added through a compound that can leach. Underlayment: The Step Nobody Skips Twice

Geotextile underlayment goes beneath the liner and, optionally, above it where heavy decorative stone will be placed inside the pond. Its purpose is simple: cushion the 45-mil EPDM against the sharp stones, glass fragments, and tree roots that exist in virtually every native soil installation site, and eliminate the point-load stress that causes premature liner failure.

The value proposition of underlayment is straightforward. A 10×15 ft underlayment sheet typically costs $40–$80. A pond liner replacement — drain, stone removal, liner replacement, stone reinstallation, refill — typically costs $400–$800 in materials and a full weekend of labor. Underlayment is not optional for any in-ground pond installation on native soil. Size it identically to your liner.

For any area inside the pond where you plan to place heavy decorative boulders or large stones directly on the liner surface, install a second layer of underlayment above the liner before placing the stone. Stone edges — particularly angular fieldstone and split-face boulders — concentrate enormous pressure on the liner surface over time. A second underlayment layer above the liner in stone placement areas reduces this load and is strongly recommended for any pond with boulders heavier than 40–50 pounds.

Your excavation will not match your plan exactly. Soil slips, shelves come out wider than marked, and the actual deep zone ends up slightly larger than designed. Always measure the actual excavation — length, width, and actual maximum depth — before ordering the liner. Excavate first, measure second, order third.
