The OASE BioTec 39000 ScreenMatic² is a gravity-return biomechanical filter that does something most filters at this price point do not: it uses 5 watts of electricity. Five. The belt motor that automatically cleans the 300-micron mechanical screen draws less power than a night light, while the filter handles up to 39,000 gallons of decorative pond water or up to 9,750 gallons of heavily stocked koi pond.

What makes the flow path work at 5 watts is the fundamental design. The BioTec 39000 is a gravity-return filter â water flows in from the pond pump, passes through the mechanical screen and biological chambers, and returns to the pond by gravity through a DN 110 (4-inch) outlet. The filter itself requires almost no power because the pump provides all the head pressure. The screen cleaning motor activates only when the intelligent sensor detects debris buildup. The LED display shows exactly what the filter needs, when it needs it.

Important installation note: as a gravity-return filter, the BioTec 39000 must be placed above the pond water level. It cannot be submerged or placed below the surface of the pond. The filterâs footprint is 52.5 inches long by 25 inches wide by 33 inches tall â plan your installation accordingly.

How The BioTec 39000 Works
The BioTec 39000 is a gravity-return flow-through filter. Understanding this is essential for correct installation:
- Water enters the filter through the inlet (1", 1-1/4", 1-1/2", or 2" inlet adapters included) from a pond pump.
- The 300-micron ScreenMatic² belt captures coarse solids mechanically before they reach the biological zone. Debris is deposited into the sludge basket for removal.
- Water passes through three foam zones of different densities where beneficial bacteria colonize and convert ammonia and nitrites.
- The phossless filter cartridges actively bind phosphates and heavy metals from the water.
- Clean water exits through the DN 110 (4") gravity return outlet, flowing downhill back to the pond. Note: a 4-inch rubber coupler (sold separately) is required for this connection.
- The filter must be positioned above the pond water surface for gravity return to work. It can be partially buried (up to 1/3 height) and can be concealed with an OASE FiltoCap rock cover.
