Description
The Aquascape 95054 UltraKlean™ 3500 is a pressurized biological and mechanical pond filter with an integrated 28-watt T5 high-output UV clarifier — delivering crystal-clear water for ponds up to 3,500 gallons. Unlike traditional pressure filters that use foam sponges, the UltraKlean uses sponge-free BioBall media that packs together to trap debris while providing exceptional surface area for beneficial bacteria colonization. A swirl sleeve inside the UV chamber maximizes UV-C exposure time for superior algae elimination.
The UltraKlean’s self-cleaning backwash system handles routine maintenance in under five minutes without opening the canister or getting hands dirty — just turn the knob to CLEAN, wait for the water to run clear through the waste port, then press Reset. An integrated clean indicator LED on the control panel automatically alerts you when backwashing is needed. A bulb-saver timer lets you set UV operation to 6, 12, or 24 hours per day to extend lamp life and create a window for adding water treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions
What pond size is the UltraKlean 3500 rated for?
The Aquascape 95054 UltraKlean 3500 is designed for ponds up to 3,500 gallons with a light fish load. For ponds with a heavy fish load (koi, many goldfish) or high sun exposure, the effective capacity is approximately 1,750 gallons — fish produce significantly more biological waste, requiring a higher filtration capacity per gallon. The pressurized design allows placement above or below the waterfall grade, giving you flexibility in how you integrate it into your landscape.
What is the UV clarifier wattage, and how does it work?
The UltraKlean 3500 features an integrated 28-watt T5 high-output UV clarifier. As water passes through the UV chamber, the UV-C light destroys the DNA of single-celled suspended algae, causing them to clump together so the BioBall media can trap them — eliminating the “pea soup” green water effect. A swirl sleeve inside the UV chamber slows water rotation, maximizing UV-C exposure time for superior algae elimination. The replacement UV bulb is Aquascape SKU 95031 (28W, 12.5”×0.75” diameter, $59.99).
How often do I need to replace the UV bulb?
Replace the UV bulb (SKU 95031, 28W) once per season — approximately every 12 months of continuous use. UV-C output degrades well before the bulb stops glowing visually, so a bulb that still lights up may have lost most of its algae-killing intensity by end of season. Annual replacement at spring startup is the best practice for consistent green water control.
The integrated bulb-saver timer can help extend bulb life by running the UV only 6 or 12 hours per day during periods when algae pressure is lower (cooler months, shaded ponds). Note: the UV bulb, quartz sleeve, and filter media are not covered under the 3-year warranty — they are consumable parts.
What is the advantage of the sponge-free BioBall design?
Unlike pressure filters that use foam sponges, the UltraKlean uses high-surface-area BioBalls that pack together to trap debris mechanically as water flows through. The advantages:
- No sponge washing — BioBalls don’t clog as quickly as foam and never need to be removed for cleaning; the backwash system handles maintenance in place.
- Superior biological surface area — BioBalls provide more colonization space for nitrifying bacteria than equivalent foam volume.
- Long media life — BioBalls last far longer than foam sponges, which degrade over years of use.
How does the backwash cleaning work?
When the red/yellow Clean indicator LED on the control panel lights up (or when you notice reduced flow), it’s time to backwash:
- Turn the top knob to the “CLEAN” setting — this reverses the water flow through the BioBalls, agitating them to release trapped debris.
- Dirty water exits through the backwash discharge port — direct this hose away from the pond to a drain or garden area.
- Continue until the discharge water runs clear (typically 2–5 minutes).
- Turn the knob back to “FILTER” and press the “Reset Clean” button to reset the indicator.
The entire process takes under 5 minutes and requires no canister opening or hands contact with the media.
What pump is recommended for the UltraKlean 3500?
Aquascape’s matched pump for the UltraKlean 3500 is the AquaForce 5200 solids-handling waterfall pump — it is included in the all-in-one UltraKlean 3500 Filtration Kit (SKU 95060). The filter’s maximum flow rate is 5,200 GPH.
Important pump compatibility note: Use only magnetically driven (mag-drive) or asynchronous pumps with the UltraKlean. Direct-drive impeller pumps are not compatible and can damage the filter. The AquaForce series and AquaSurge series are both suitable choices.
Can I use the UltraKlean 3500 in winter?
The UltraKlean 3500 is not designed for freezing temperatures. Water expanding inside the pressurized canister or UV quartz sleeve as it freezes can crack the housing. Before the first hard frost:
- Turn off and disconnect the pump
- Open the backwash valve to drain the filter completely
- Store the filter in a frost-free garage, shed, or basement
- Store the UV bulb indoors separately to protect the quartz sleeve
Reinstall in spring when temperatures are consistently above freezing and replace the UV bulb with a new one for the season.
What warranty does the UltraKlean 3500 carry?
The Aquascape UltraKlean 3500 is backed by Aquascape’s 3-Year Limited Warranty. Note: the warranty specifically excludes consumable parts — the UV lamp (SKU 95031), quartz sleeve, and filter media (BioBalls) are not covered. Retain your proof of purchase for warranty claims.
