How a Pond Skimmer Works — And Why Every Koi Pond Needs One

Leaves, pollen, grass clippings, and organic debris float on the pond surface before becoming waterlogged and sinking. Once they sink and decompose they release ammonia and nitrates — toxic to fish, nutrients for algae, and a major driver of sludge buildup. A pond skimmer captures this material at the surface, before decomposition begins, and intercepts it in a net you empty during routine maintenance.

Surface current draws debris in
The pump inside the skimmer creates suction that draws the water surface — and anything floating on it — toward the skimmer weir opening on the opposite side of the pond from the waterfall.

A pond skimmer box is the mechanical filtration stage of any ecosystem pond. It sits at the pond edge, buried so the weir door sits at the water surface, and continuously draws in surface water — and everything floating on it — through a debris net and filter media before the pump pushes clean water to the biological filter. Without a skimmer, organic debris settles to the bottom and decomposes, releasing the nutrients that fuel chronic algae growth and the ammonia that stresses fish.

Sizing a pond skimmer comes down to two numbers: pond surface area (square feet) and pump flow rate (GPH at operating head height). Every skimmer has a rated maximum GPH it can handle — run your pump above that rating and the skimmer overflows or creates backpressure. Run it significantly below and the weir door won't draw the surface effectively. The target is to match your skimmer's rated flow range to your pump's actual output at head height, not the pump's zero-head maximum. Where to Install a Pond Skimmer — 3 Rules That Maximize Performance

The right skimmer placed in the wrong location will still underperform. Placement is as important as sizing.

Rule 1 — Opposite the waterfall
Place the skimmer directly opposite the waterfall return. This creates a cross-pond surface current that continuously sweeps debris toward the skimmer weir — the most effective passive collection possible. A skimmer placed beside the waterfall only captures a small zone near the return.
Rule 2 — Account for prevailing wind
Wind blows debris to the downwind edge of the pond. If your waterfall placement and downwind edge happen to be on opposite sides, you've already optimized. If not, placing the skimmer on the downwind side is a secondary priority after Rule 1 and will significantly improve debris capture on still days.
Rule 3 — Correct water level at the weir
Set the skimmer height so the pond water level sits at the midpoint of the weir door — the floating flap. Too low and the pump loses prime; too high and the door can't float and debris slips under it. Do all ponds need a skimmer?

Any pond with koi or other fish should have a properly sized skimmer — the combination of fish waste and organic debris creates an organic load no biological filter can keep up with alone. How do I size a pond skimmer?

Can a skimmer house the pump?
Yes — all of the standalone skimmer boxes we carry are specifically designed to house a submersible pump inside the skimmer housing. This is the standard ecosystem pond configuration: pump sits inside the skimmer, pulls water through the weir and debris net, and pushes it to the BioFalls. Pump-in-skimmer setups simplify plumbing, provide easy pump access for maintenance (everything is in one box at the pond edge), and protect the pump from large debris. The pump should be sized to match the skimmer's flow range.
How often does a skimmer basket need to be emptied?
It depends on the season and the pond's debris environment. During fall leaf drop and spring algae flush, the basket may need emptying every two to three days. During lower-debris midsummer periods, once a week is usually enough. The clearest signal is flow performance — if waterfall volume visibly drops, check the skimmer basket first. It takes under two minutes to lift, empty, and replace. Keeping the basket clear is the single most impactful routine maintenance task for most ecosystem ponds.
What is the difference between an external skimmer box and an in-pond (floating) skimmer?
An external skimmer box is installed at the pond edge, with the liner attached to the skimmer's faceplate. Water enters through the weir at the water's surface.
