Description
The Aquascape Dual Union Check Valve 2.0 (48026) is the industry-standard check valve for Aquascape skimmer filter systems and Pondless Waterfall Vaults. The heavy-duty, swing-style flapper maximizes water flow when the pump runs, then seals against backflow the moment the pump shuts off — keeping your biological filter full and your skimmer from overflowing during restarts.
What sets the 2.0 apart: a set of innovative reversible fittings that rotate to any orientation, eliminating the guesswork of matching pump and filter fitting sizes. Standing 14” tall before extension, it fits inside standard skimmer chambers and extends for taller filter applications. Both union connections unscrew by hand — no tools required — making pump removal for winter storage or cleaning a 60-second job. Includes fittings for both 2” and 1.5” pipe connections right out of the box.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need a Dual Union Check Valve for my waterfall?
Without a check valve, every time your pump stops — whether during a power outage, manual shutdown, or winter shutdown — the water in your biological filter drains backward through the pump discharge line and down to the pond. This causes two problems: (1) the BioFalls or waterfall filter empties and the beneficial bacteria on your filter media temporarily lose water flow, stressing the colony; and (2) the sudden surge of water returns to the pond through the skimmer, potentially overflowing it. The 48026 check valve prevents both by sealing the discharge line the moment flow stops.
How does the "Dual Union" feature make maintenance easier?
The dual union design means both sides of the valve can be unscrewed completely by hand, with no tools. To remove the pump for cleaning, winter storage, or replacement: unscrew the lower union to disconnect from the pump, then unscrew the upper union to detach from the plumbing above. The valve holds the water in the filter line above it, preventing the filter from draining during pump removal. Reinstall in reverse order. The entire process takes about 60 seconds.
Will this valve affect the GPH of my pump?
Minimal impact. The swing-style flapper design opens fully when the pump runs, creating a wide, unobstructed flow path that minimizes friction loss. Unlike spring-loaded ball-type check valves (which require significant pressure to hold open against the spring tension), the swing flapper relies on gravity to close and water pressure to open — there’s no spring tension fighting the pump. At the flow rates of typical pond pumps (1,000–5,000 GPH), the 48026 imposes negligible head loss.
Is it compatible with a Pondless Waterfall Vault?
Yes — the 48026 is the standard check valve for Aquascape Pondless Waterfall Vaults (model 49000) and is also used in Aquascape Signature Series Skimmers. The valve mounts inside the vault chamber with the pump below and the discharge plumbing above, fitting within the compact space of these enclosures. The extendable height (14” before extension) accommodates standard vault depths, and additional height is available for deeper installations. The reversible fittings handle the pump outlet orientation without needing special adapters.
What should I do with the check valve during winter?
If winterizing completely: loosen both threaded unions by hand to drain the water from the valve body and discharge line — retained water can crack fittings if it freezes. Remove the pump following Aquascape’s winterization instructions. The valve itself can remain in place if fully drained. If running the pond year-round (common in climates with occasional frost), the valve continues operating normally as long as the pump runs — backflow prevention is especially important in winter when biological filter bacteria are sensitive to temperature swings from drain-back events.
