The Aquascape Dual Union 3” Check Valve Assembly (SKU 29098) is a heavy-duty 90° swing-style check valve designed for large-pump pond installations. It connects your pump to the pond plumbing, prevents backflow when the pump shuts off or power is lost, and makes pump removal quick and easy through its dual union connections on both sides — no tools required and no need to drain the BioFalls filter for routine maintenance.
Designed specifically for the AquascapePRO 10,000, Tsurumi 12PN, and AquaSurge 5000 pumps when used with the Pondless Waterfall Vault with Extension, Large Snorkel Vault, or Grande Skimmer. Includes a 24-inch length of 3” flex PVC pipe and a 3” male adapter for a complete pump-to-plumbing connection out of the box.
How the Dual Union Check Valve Works
The 29098 is a 90° (elbow-style) swing-style check valve. Water enters vertically from the pump discharge port (3” FPT connection at the bottom) and exits horizontally through the 3” slip fitting toward the filter or vault plumbing. Inside the valve body, a heavy-duty flapper plate swings open under pump pressure, allowing maximum flow. When the pump stops (or power is cut), the flapper swings shut under gravity and water pressure, blocking backflow within seconds.
Union couplings on both the pump-side (bottom) and the plumbing-side (top/exit) allow tool-free disconnection at either point for pump servicing, filter cleaning, or winter removal — without losing water from the filter body above.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I need the 3" valve or the 2" valve?
Measure the inside diameter of your plumbing pipe — not the collar, not the outside of the pipe. The 29098 requires pipe with a true 3” inside diameter (3” Schedule 40 PVC has a 3.50” inside slip opening).
Most residential ponds use 2” plumbing. The 3” valve is specifically for large pump installations using the AquascapePRO 10,000, Tsurumi 12PN, or AquaSurge 5000 in conjunction with large Aquascape vaults and skimmers. If you have any doubt about your pipe size, contact us before ordering — the vast majority of 3” check valve returns are from buyers who have 2” tubing.
What prevents water from draining back through the pump when it's off?
The 29098 contains a heavy-duty swing-style flapper inside the valve body. When the pump is running, water pressure holds the flapper open, allowing maximum unobstructed flow. When the pump shuts off (or power is lost), the flapper swings shut under gravity and reverse water pressure within seconds, preventing the water in the filter and pipe run from draining back through the pump. This protects pump internals and maintains prime in the system, so the pump starts instantly when power is restored.
Can I remove my pump without draining the BioFalls filter?
Yes — this is the primary maintenance advantage of the dual union design. The union couplings on both sides of the valve allow you to twist off the union collar without tools, disconnecting the pump side (bottom) or the plumbing side (top) independently. Because the check valve holds water in the filter above when closed, you can remove the pump for cleaning or winter storage without losing the water in the BioFalls filter body. Reconnection is equally simple: hand-tighten the union collar back onto the threads.
