Description
Aqua Meds® Pond Armor (1 Gallon) is a pH-buffered water conditioner and slime-coat protector for koi ponds and water gardens. A fish's slime coat is its first line of defense — when it's damaged by netting, handling, spawning, or abrasion from rocks, fish become vulnerable to ulcers, sores, and bacterial infection. Pond Armor forms a synthetic protective slime coat that shields the fish while it rebuilds its own, and is enriched with aloe vera, vitamin E, and electrolytes to support recovery and reduce handling stress.
It's also a genuine water conditioner: Pond Armor detoxifies chlorine, chloramine, and heavy metals, making it useful any time you add tap water or handle, net, transport, or introduce fish. It does not hinder your fish's gills or breathing, and it's safe to use with fish in the pond.
What Pond Armor Does
- Forms a synthetic slime coat. Provides an immediate protective layer over damaged skin and scales while the fish regenerates its own natural coat.
- Supports healing and reduces stress. Aloe vera, vitamin E, and electrolytes help fish recover from abrasions, netting, spawning injuries, and handling.
- Detoxifies tap water. Removes and neutralizes chlorine, chloramine, and heavy metals so new water is safe for fish.
- Won't impair breathing. Unlike some heavy slime-coat products, Pond Armor does not hinder the fish's gills or respiration.
- Use any time fish are handled. Ideal before and after netting, transporting, introducing new fish, or breeding activity.
- Safe in a stocked pond. pH-buffered and safe for koi, goldfish, and aquatic life when used as directed.
How to Use & Dosing
Standard dose: 5 mL (1 teaspoon) per 20 US gallons (75 L) — equivalent to 1 oz per 60 gallons. Shake well before each use. Dilute the correct amount in a bucket of tap water, stir, then pour slowly around the pond or into the return flow. If dosing directly to the pond, add it in an area of strong circulation. Dose against the volume of new water when doing a water change, or the whole pond volume when treating for slime-coat protection.
| Pond / Water Volume | Standard Dose (1 tsp / 20 gal) |
|---|---|
| 20 gallons | 1 tsp (5 mL) |
| 100 gallons | 5 tsp (~25 mL) |
| 250 gallons | ~4 oz |
| 500 gallons | ~8.3 oz |
| 1,000 gallons | ~16.7 oz (about a pint) |
| 2,000 gallons | ~33 oz |
When to Reach for Pond Armor
- After netting, handling, or transporting fish — replaces slime coat lost to friction.
- When adding new fish — reduces the stress of a move and protects during acclimation.
- Following spawning — breeding activity is abrasive and strips slime coat.
- After injury or visible scale/skin damage — shields the wound area while it recovers.
- During water changes — conditions the new tap water and protects fish in one step.
Available Sizes
The 1-gallon size is the best value per ounce for larger ponds or frequent handling/water changes. Coverage figures are at the standard 1 tsp / 20 gal dose.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much Pond Armor do I use?
The standard dose is 1 teaspoon (5 mL) per 20 gallons, which is the same as 1 ounce per 60 gallons. Shake well, dilute in a bucket of water, and pour slowly into an area of strong circulation. In areas with very high chlorine or chloramine, the dose can be safely increased or repeated up to about 5× the standard rate.
How many gallons does the 1-gallon bottle treat?
At the standard 1 tsp per 20 gallons dose, a 1-gallon (128 oz) bottle treats approximately 7,680 gallons — enough for repeated slime-coat treatments and water changes on most ponds over a season.
When should I use it?
Any time fish are handled or stressed, or their slime coat may be compromised: after netting, transporting, or introducing fish; following spawning; after visible scale or skin damage; and during water changes to condition the new tap water. It can be used any time fish are being handled.
Is it safe for fish, and will it affect their breathing?
Used as directed, it's safe for koi, goldfish, and aquatic life, and it's pH-buffered. Unlike some heavier slime-coat products, Pond Armor does not hinder the fish's gills or breathing.
Does it also remove chlorine like a dechlorinator?
Yes. In addition to protecting the slime coat, Pond Armor detoxifies chlorine, chloramine, and heavy metals, so it doubles as a water conditioner when you add tap water. For very high chlorine/chloramine levels, increase or repeat the dose as directed.
What's the difference between "Pond Armor," "Armor," and "Armor Rx"?
These are names used for the same Aqua Meds slime-coat conditioner across different listings and label revisions. The formula and directions are the same; confirm the exact label on the bottle you receive.
