Description

The Aquascape Signature Series 2500 BioFalls Filter (SKU 09020) provides efficient biological and mechanical waterfall filtration for ponds up to 2,500 gallons. Water is pumped into the base of the filter via the dual 2” bulkhead inlets, flows upward through 2× Poly-Flo ESA Biological Filter Mats (50% more surface area than standard mats), then cascades over the 21.5” reversible spillway lip — creating a natural waterfall while continuously filtering the pond. Rotationally-molded rounded polyethylene construction and a Limited Lifetime Warranty make the BioFalls 2500 a permanent landscape investment. Handles up to 5,000 GPH; recommended pump range 2,000–4,500 GPH.

09020 | Ponds Up to 2,500 Gallons Up to 5,000 GPH | 21.5" Reversible Spillway Dual 2" Bulkhead Ports | 2× Poly-Flo ESA Mats Rotomolded Polyethylene | 24"×29.5"×20"H | 22.7 lbs Limited Lifetime Warranty | Optional BioBalls (holds 200) | Aquascape

How the BioFalls 2500 Works

Pond Pump (in skimmer or on pond floor)
↓ Flexible pipe runs to base of BioFalls
Water enters through 2" bulkhead inlet near base
↓ Flows upward through filter mats
2× Poly-Flo ESA Filter Mats — traps particles (mechanical) + beneficial bacteria colonization (biological)
↓ Fills filter chamber
Overflows over 21.5" reversible spillway lip
↓ Cascades over landscape rocks
Returns to pond as a natural waterfall
↓ Waterfall aeration improves oxygen levels
Repeat 24/7 for clear, healthy water

The circular, rounded body creates a swirling water flow pattern through the filter mats — distributing flow evenly across the entire mat surface rather than channeling through corners as in rectangular filter designs. This maximizes use of the full mat surface area for both mechanical trapping and bacterial colonization.

Why Choose the Signature Series 2500 BioFalls?

  • Poly-Flo ESA filter mats: Aquascape’s proprietary Poly-Flo ESA (Expanded Surface Area) mats provide 50% more biological filtration surface area than traditional filter mats — supporting a larger, more robust beneficial bacteria colony for superior water quality.
  • 21.5” reversible spillway lip: The lip is reversible, allowing large accent boulders to be placed along the front of the unit for a fully natural stone waterfall appearance — the filter completely disappears into the landscape.
  • Rotationally-molded construction: The seamless, rounded polyethylene body is manufactured via rotational molding — producing uniform wall thickness without weld lines or seams. Maximum structural strength with minimum weight (22.7 lbs).
  • Dual 2” bulkhead ports: Two inlet ports allow single or dual pump configurations, or use the second port with the optional #29015 BioFalls Filter Drain Kit for one-valve spring cleanouts.
  • Rock & plant tray: The removable upper tray holds rocks, gravel, and aquatic plants — naturalizing the filter head into the surrounding landscape and contributing additional biological filtration via plant root systems.
  • Patented non-cross-threading brass hardware: Corrosion-resistant brass screws with a patented design that prevents cross-threading during waterfall lip installation and seasonal removal.
  • Limited Lifetime Warranty on the filter housing

Pump Sizing Guide for the BioFalls 2500

The BioFalls 2500 handles flow rates up to 5,000 GPH. For most ecosystem pond installations, a pump delivering 2,000–4,500 GPH provides the best balance of waterfall flow, filtration efficiency, and overflow control. Pumps at or near the 5,000 GPH maximum may require the filter to be tilted slightly forward for proper overflow management at high flow.

For a complete ecosystem pond system, the BioFalls 2500 pairs naturally with the Aquascape Signature Series 1000 Pond Skimmer (43022) — the skimmer handles mechanical surface debris removal while the BioFalls handles biological and mechanical filtration at the waterfall head.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are BioBalls included with the BioFalls 2500?

No. BioBalls are not included in the standard BioFalls 2500 kit. The filter ships with 2× Poly-Flo ESA Biological Filter Mats as the standard filtration media, which are highly effective for most pond applications.

BioBalls are an optional upgrade sold separately. The BioFalls 2500 can accommodate up to 200 BioBalls for enhanced biological filtration surface area. Adding BioBalls is particularly beneficial in ponds with high fish loads (koi ponds) where maximum bacterial colonization capacity is desired.

Aquascape BioBalls are available from Pond Pro Direct — call (765) 508-4352 to order.

What is the second bulkhead port for?

In the standard installation, one 2” bulkhead port receives the pump pipe from the skimmer or pond pump. The second 2” bulkhead port is plugged using the included hex head plug — your hardware bag includes both 2× bulkhead fittings and 1× hex head plug specifically for this purpose.

The second port serves two potential uses:

  • Dual pump configuration: If your pond system uses two pumps, both ports can be used as inlets for combined flow.
  • Optional Drain Kit: The second port accommodates the optional #29015 Signature Series BioFalls Filter Drain Kit, which adds a drain valve for easy one-step filter cleanouts during spring pond maintenance. This is strongly recommended for owners who want to simplify their annual cleanout routine.
Is the BioFalls 2500 a pressurized filter?

No. The BioFalls 2500 is a gravity-flow / overflow waterfall filter — it is not a pressurized filter. Understanding this distinction is important for installation planning:

  • Your pond pump pushes water into the base of the BioFalls under pressure via the 2” bulkhead pipe
  • Water fills the filter chamber, rising upward through the filter mats
  • The filter then overflows by gravity over the waterfall spillway lip — this is not pressurized
  • Because it relies on gravity overflow, the BioFalls must be installed at the highest point of your waterfall, so water can cascade naturally back down into the pond

This is different from the Aquascape UltraKlean pressurized filters (SKUs 95058/95059/95060), which use a sealed canister that can be placed at ground level or below. The BioFalls must be elevated above the pond water surface.

What is the reversible waterfall lip and why does it matter?

The 21.5” waterfall spillway lip is designed to be installed in two orientations:

  • Standard orientation: The lip extends out over the front of the filter, creating a clean waterfall edge. Rocks and plants are placed around the filter exterior.
  • Reversed orientation: The lip is flipped, recessing the spillway edge slightly into the filter. This creates space to position large accent boulders in front of and overhanging the filter — completely hiding the filter behind a natural stone face and creating a fully convincing natural waterfall appearance.

For landscape builders wanting a naturalistic result, the reversed orientation with large boulders overhanging the lip is the preferred approach and is what makes Aquascape BioFalls filters stand out aesthetically from simpler waterfall spillways.

What pump do I need for the BioFalls 2500?

The BioFalls 2500 is rated for flow rates up to 5,000 GPH. For typical ecosystem pond installations, the recommended pump range is 2,000–4,500 GPH.

General guidelines:

  • For a 1,500 gallon pond: 1,500–2,500 GPH pump (minimum 1× hourly turnover)
  • For a 2,000 gallon pond: 2,000–3,500 GPH pump
  • For a 2,500 gallon pond at rated capacity: 2,500–4,500 GPH pump
  • Koi ponds: size for 1.5–2× hourly turnover given higher bio-load

For a matched Aquascape ecosystem system, the BioFalls 2500 pairs with the Signature Series 1000 Skimmer (43022) and a submersible pump housed inside the skimmer. The AquaForce pump series is designed for this configuration. Call (765) 508-4352 for help selecting the right pump for your pond.

How does the BioFalls 2500 compare to the BioFalls 1000 and 6000?

The Aquascape Signature Series BioFalls filters scale with pond size:

  • 99774 BioFalls 1000: Up to 1,000 gallons | 3,000 GPH max | 15” spillway | Single 2” bulkhead. Ideal for small water gardens and feature ponds.
  • 09020 BioFalls 2500 (this): Up to 2,500 gallons | 5,000 GPH max | 21.5” spillway | Dual 2” bulkheads. Standard choice for medium ecosystem ponds and koi ponds.
  • 29319/29384 BioFalls 6000: Up to 6,000 gallons | 10,000 GPH max | 29” spillway | Available in 2” or 3” bulkhead versions. For large koi ponds and water gardens.

For ponds between 1,000 and 2,500 gallons, the BioFalls 2500 is usually the right choice — the 1000 would be undersized and the 6000 would be oversized. For koi ponds with heavy fish loads, consider sizing up (use the 2500 for ponds up to ~1,800 gallons at maximum stocking density).

Can the BioFalls 2500 be used without a skimmer?

Yes. While the BioFalls 2500 is designed as part of Aquascape’s ecosystem pond system (skimmer + BioFalls + pump), it can be used with any submersible pump placed directly on the pond floor. A pump with a protective pre-filter cage (such as the AquaForce series) is recommended for in-pond placement without a skimmer.

However, pairing with a skimmer is strongly recommended for ponds with fish or significant leaf debris, as it:

  • Handles surface debris (leaves, algae, organic matter) before it sinks and decays
  • Houses the pump in a protected enclosure, simplifying maintenance
  • Creates the complete closed-loop filtration circuit Aquascape designs for ecosystem balance
What warranty does the BioFalls 2500 carry?

The Aquascape Signature Series 2500 BioFalls Filter carries a Limited Lifetime Warranty on the filter housing, as confirmed by Aquascape: “All Signature Series BioFalls Pond Filters include a limited lifetime warranty, ensuring year after year of trouble-free use.”

The Poly-Flo ESA filter mats, media bags, and hardware are considered maintenance/replacement items and are not covered by the lifetime warranty. Replacement mats are available from Pond Pro Direct.
