How does the sponge-free design reduce maintenance?
Traditional pressure filters use foam sponges that must be removed and hand-rinsed — a messy, time-consuming process. The UltraKlean 2000 uses a sponge-free design with UltraKlean BioBalls (Part #95055) instead. The small plastic BioBalls pack together, creating channels that trap debris as water flows through. They also provide a high-surface-area home for beneficial bacteria that break down ammonia and nitrites biologically.
Because the media stays in the sealed canister, backwashing is as simple as turning the valve to "Clean" — no opening, no hand contact, no mess. The full cycle takes under 5 minutes. You can add an additional box of BioBalls (#95055) to increase biological filtration capacity if desired.
How does the integrated T5 UV clarifier work?
The integrated 14-Watt T5 high-output UV clarifier destroys single-celled suspended algae (the cause of green water) as pond water flows through the UV chamber. A swirl sleeve creates a helical flow path around the UV tube, maximizing the time water spends in direct UV contact for greater algae elimination efficiency.
The electronic bulb-saver timer lets you select UV operating time: 6, 12, or 24 hours per day. During an active green water bloom, use the 24-hour setting. Once the pond clears, dial back to 12 or 6 hours to extend UV bulb life. The UV bulb should be replaced annually, or sooner if green water returns despite the UV running. The quartz sleeve should be cleaned when UV output appears to decline.
How do I use the backwash feature to clean the filter?
The cleaning indicator light on the control panel automatically alerts you when the filter needs backwashing — you don’t need to monitor flow or check the filter manually. When the indicator lights up:

Can the UltraKlean 2000 be buried in the ground?
Yes. The pressurized design allows burial up to 1” below the lid clips on the canister — deep enough to conceal the body in a landscape bed or near a waterfall while the lid and control panel remain accessible at ground level. This makes the filter easy to hide among rocks, plants, or mulch.
In freezing climates, the filter must be drained and stored in a frost-free location during winter. Ice inside the canister can damage the quartz sleeve, UV ballast, or canister body. Note that the quartz sleeve is not covered under the 3-year warranty, so winter drainage is important to protect this component.
