Description
The Blue Thumb ABBC100 Triple Rustic Basalt Fountain Kit features three natural volcanic basalt columns — 18", 24", and 30" heights — with a fully unpolished, raw surface finish on all sides. Water emerges from the central drill hole of each column and disperses immediately over the rough stone texture, cascading down into the surrounding pebble bed. This complete kit includes the Achelous 48" AquaBox subsurface basin, 1,495 GPH Mag-Drive pump, kink-free tubing with flow control and ball valves, 200 lbs of polished pebbles, and a splash apron. Every column is hand-cut from real volcanic basalt — no two pieces identical.

Why the ABBC100 Rustic Finish?
- The rustic finish is the most natural-looking of the three basalt series. With no polished surfaces anywhere, the ABBC100 columns look exactly like volcanic stone columns pulled directly from the earth — which is what they are. The exterior crust ranges from beige to red to black depending on where in the lava flow each column cooled, and the rough surface creates a highly irregular water dispersal that looks organic rather than designed. For naturalistic garden settings, rock gardens, or woodland landscapes, the ABBC100 integrates more seamlessly than polished alternatives.
- Real volcanic stone — sourced directly from quarries worldwide. Blue Thumb works directly with quarries to supply high-quality basalt columns, which skilled artisans then drill for water flow. Natural variation in texture, color, and veining ensures every ABBC100 kit is unique. The 30" column from one kit will not look like the 30" column from another. Basalt is approximately 10% denser than granite — the weight is a quality indicator, not a limitation.
- ~360 lbs of stone with no anchoring needed. The weight of natural basalt is a functional advantage: these columns will not shift in wind, flood, or normal garden activity once placed. The 30" column at ~150 lbs sits immovably in the pebble bed. No ground anchors, no concrete footings, no hidden fasteners required. The Achelous 48" AquaBox supports up to 1,200 lbs static load — well within the ~360 lb stone requirement with substantial margin for visitors who may inadvertently step on the basin grate.
- 3-way independent flow control — one fountain, three acoustic profiles. The included 3-way flow control valve with individual ball valves for each column lets you dial in different water volumes per column. Running the 30" column at full volume while reducing the 18" column produces a gradient cascade where the tall stone is dominant and the smaller stones provide ambient backdrop. All three at full flow creates a louder, more enveloping sound signature. The valve assembly is accessible at ground level — no need to lift columns or disturb the pebble bed to adjust.
- 200 lbs of pebbles covers the basin completely. The 48" AquaBox grate accommodates a 48"-diameter pebble bed. At 200 lbs, the pebble layer is approximately 2"–3" deep across the basin surface, which completely conceals the basin grate and creates the "disappearing" water feature effect where water seems to emerge from stone and vanish into the ground. Black pebbles create maximum contrast with the basalt columns; mixed pebbles provide a more naturalistic, river-gravel appearance.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the exact heights of the columns in the ABBC100?
The ABBC100 is the Short Kit of Blue Thumb's Triple Rustic Basalt series. It includes three natural basalt columns at heights of 18 inches, 24 inches, and 30 inches. Each column is approximately 8"–10" in diameter (natural variation — no two identical). If you need taller columns, the ABBC125 Tall Kit (24", 30", 36") and ABBC175 Extra Tall (24", 36", 48") are also available — call us: (765) 508-4352.
What is included in the ABBC100 kit?
The complete ABBC100 includes: three natural basalt columns (18", 24", 30" rustic finish), Achelous 48" AquaBox subsurface basin (51.5" overall dia × 16"H, 95-gal capacity, Lifetime Warranty), 1,495 GPH Mag-Drive pump (153W, 1.46A, 20' cord), kink-free tubing with quick disconnects, 3-way independent flow control valve, ball valves, all required fittings, splash apron, and 200 lbs of polished pebbles (Black default or Mixed on request).
How heavy are the basalt columns? Will my patio or deck support this?
Natural basalt weighs approximately 5 lbs per inch of height. For the ABBC100 Short Kit: the 30" column is approximately 150 lbs, the 24" column approximately 120 lbs, and the 18" column approximately 90 lbs — roughly 360 lbs of stone combined. Add the Achelous basin (~65 lbs) and 200 lbs of pebbles and the total installed weight is approximately 625 lbs. The 48" Achelous AquaBox has a maximum static load rating of 1,200 lbs — the column weight is well within rating. For concrete patios or ground-level installations, 625 lbs distributed across a 51.5"-diameter footprint is manageable. For deck installations, consult a structural engineer regarding joist capacity before installing.
How does the 3-way flow control valve work?
The ABBC100 includes a 3-way flow control valve with individual ball valves for each of the three columns. The 1,495 GPH pump output is split between the three columns, and each ball valve independently adjusts the flow to that column. Opening all three fully distributes flow equally; closing one column directs its share to the remaining two. You can set the 30" column at full flow, the 24" at half flow, and the 18" at a trickle — or any other combination — to customize the visual and acoustic profile of the fountain without adjusting the pump.
Are 200 lbs of pebbles really included? Can I choose the color?
Yes — 200 lbs of polished pebbles are included standard with the ABBC100. This covers the 48" Achelous basin grate completely at approximately 2"–3" depth, creating the disappearing-water effect. Pebble color: Black Polished (default) or Mixed Polished. Specify your preference in the Order Instructions field at checkout, or call us: (765) 508-4352. If no preference is specified, the kit ships with Black Polished pebbles.
How do I winterize the ABBC100 in a cold climate?
For climates with prolonged below-freezing temperatures:
- Turn off and remove the 1,495 GPH Mag-Drive pump. For a Mag-Drive pump: simply clean it, dry it, and store it indoors in a frost-free location. No bucket of water is needed — bucket storage is only necessary for oil-and-seals type pumps to prevent seal cracking. The Mag-Drive motor has no oil seals.
- Do NOT drain the Achelous basin. Leave water in the basin over winter. Frozen water in the basin anchors it in the ground — draining the basin allows frost heave to push it upward out of the soil, potentially cracking the basin or displacing the installation.
- The basalt columns can remain outdoors year-round. Real volcanic basalt is engineered by nature to survive freeze-thaw cycles.
What is the difference between the ABBC100, ABBC200, and ABBC500?
All three are real natural basalt triple-column kits with the same Short Kit heights (18", 24", 30"), same Achelous 48" AquaBox basin, same 1,495 GPH pump, and same 200 lbs of pebbles. The only difference is the column top finish, which changes the water behavior:
- ABBC100 (Rustic): Fully unpolished, raw surface all sides. Water disperses immediately over the rough stone in an organic, naturalistic cascade.
- ABBC200 (Flat Polished Top): Mirror-smooth flat top, raw natural sides. Water sheets across the polished surface before cascading off the edge.
- ABBC500 (Bowl Polished Top): Hand-carved bowl-shaped polished top, raw sides. Water pools in the bowl before overflowing in all directions simultaneously.
The rustic finish (ABBC100) integrates most naturally into garden and naturalistic landscape settings. The polished tops (ABBC200, ABBC500) are more contemporary and architectural. Call us to discuss which finish suits your design: (765) 508-4352.
