Why Elite for a Small Pond?
Contractor-Grade Walls
Elite skimmer is 38% thicker than DIY models — ribs and gussets prevent ground pressure distortion. Built for permanent installation.
Two Matala Mats
Other small pond kits at this price range don't include filter media. Both Matala mats are in the box — biological filtration from day one.
Solids Handling Pump
Passes fine debris without clogging. Installed inside the skimmer — protected, accessible, and replaceable without draining the pond.
LED Light Included
Standalone LED pond lights cost $30–70 separately. The PB1250 includes a light and transformer — your waterfall feature illuminated from the first night.
Lifetime Warranty
Skimmer and waterfall filter both carry Blue Thumb's Lifetime Manufacturers Warranty. Buy once, maintain it, and it's covered.
20-Year Liner
45-mil EPDM rubber liner with a 20-year manufacturer warranty against UV breakdown. The foundation of the pond is covered for two decades.
Blue Thumb Elite Pond Kit — Full Series
The PB1250 is the smallest kit in the Blue Thumb Elite Series. All five sizes include the same Elite-grade components scaled to pond size:
Not sure which size fits your space? A good rule: measure your available digging area, subtract 2'–3' from each dimension for edging and equipment placement, and choose the kit whose pond footprint fits comfortably within that space. When in doubt, size up — a slightly larger pond is easier to keep in balance. Call us: (765) 508-4352.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many gallons is the 6'×8' Elite Pond, and how many fish can it support?
The PB1250 builds a pond approximately 550 gallons at 6'×8'×2' deep. For fish stocking at startup, a conservative guideline is 1 inch of fish per 10 gallons — so roughly 55 inches of fish at full capacity. In practice, starting with 3–5 small goldfish or 2–3 small koi under 8" and adding fish gradually as the biological filter establishes is the safest approach. The PB1014 pump turns over the 550-gallon pond approximately 4× per hour, providing strong circulation and oxygenation for a modest koi or goldfish population.
What pump is included and what is the GPH?
The PB1250 includes the PB1014 Solids Handling Pump at 2,160 GPH. It is a direct-drive pump on 120V, positioned inside the 8" Elite Skimmer where it is protected from debris clogging by the skimmer's Matala filter mat and net basket. At 2,160 GPH, the pump delivers strong waterfall flow through the 2"×25' flex PVC line to the 14" Elite Biological Waterfall Filter. Call us for current pump energy consumption data: (765) 508-4352.
Why does the Elite Waterfall Filter include Matala mats when other kits don't?
Blue Thumb includes two Matala biological filtration mats standard in every 14" Elite Waterfall Filter. Matala mats provide far more effective biological filtration surface area than plastic bio-balls or loose media — the open-cell structure colonizes quickly with the beneficial bacteria that drive ammonia and nitrite conversion. Competing brands (Atlantic FilterFalls, EasyPro Pro-Series AquaFalls) don't include filter media — you need to purchase Matala mats or bio-balls separately at $30–60 each before biological filtration is operational. With the PB1250, both mats are in the box and your filtration system is ready on day one of filling.
Is this kit suitable for a patio, courtyard, or small backyard?
Yes — the 6'×8' footprint makes the PB1250 one of the most versatile Elite kits for constrained spaces. The pond excavation is approximately 6'×8'×2' deep. Above ground, the skimmer adds approximately 15" to one side and the waterfall filter another 2–3 feet of elevation at the opposite end. The visible water surface plus the waterfall and surrounding boulder edging typically occupies a 10'×12' to 12'×14' area in the landscape, depending on rock placement. For tight patios, the PB1250 can be positioned in a corner with the waterfall at the back wall. Call us to discuss your specific space and layout: (765) 508-4352.
How do I winterize the PB1250 kit in cold climates?
Winterization for the PB1250:
- Pump (PB1014 — direct drive): Do NOT store in a bucket of water. Remove the pump from the skimmer when sustained freezing temperatures arrive. Clean the pump, inspect the impeller, and store dry in a frost-free location (garage, basement) until spring startup.
- Skimmer: Remove and rinse the Matala filter mat and debris net. Store the net indoors. Disconnect the check valve and drain any standing water from the PVC line to prevent freeze cracking.
- Waterfall filter: Drain the 14" Elite Biological Waterfall Filter completely. Remove and rinse the two Matala mats; store indoors to preserve the bacterial colonies if winter is short, or simply rinse and leave in the filter if it will be drained and covered.
- Pond: For fish over-winter, install a floating pond de-icer or surface aerator to maintain a small open hole in the ice for gas exchange. Do not break ice by striking it — the shock wave can harm fish.
What's the difference between the Elite kit (PB1250) and the Blue Thumb DIY pond kit?
The Blue Thumb Elite Series uses Contractor Grade components throughout — thicker walls, stronger construction, and Lifetime warranties on the skimmer and waterfall filter. Specific Elite differentiators vs. the DIY kits: (1) 38% thicker skimmer walls with ribs and gussets to prevent ground pressure distortion; (2) Elite Biological Waterfall Filter includes two Matala mats — DIY waterfall filters include a basic bio-filter mat; (3) Solids handling pump vs. standard submersible; (4) LED light included standard; (5) Installation kit with black foam sealant; (6) Full first-season water treatment kit. The DIY kits are suitable for budget-conscious installations; the Elite kits are designed for permanent, low-maintenance installations where component longevity is the priority.
Can I add a UV clarifier or auto-fill valve?
Yes to both. The 8" Elite Skimmer has an auto-fill valve fitting already molded into the side wall — add the optional Auto-Fill Valve Kit #PB1342 (sold separately) to automatically top off the pond during hot-weather evaporation periods. UV clarifiers can be plumbed inline in the 2" PVC line between the pump and the waterfall filter, or between the waterfall filter outlet and the pond. Call us to discuss sizing and compatibility: (765) 508-4352.
