Why the EP2200 Mag Drive Is a 3-Year Pump in a 6'×6' Kit
EasyPro's mag drive pumps are built around an epoxy-filled motor with no shaft seal — the impeller is driven magnetically, eliminating the most common single failure point in submersible pumps. The EP2200's 3-year warranty is nearly double the TLS Spirit direct drive pumps used in the ET Mini kits (18 months). At 190W for 2,200 GPH, the EP2200 is also significantly more efficient than the ET66FB's TLS1850 (260W for 1,850 GPH). Running both 24/7 for a full season, the EP2200 saves roughly $50–$60 in electricity compared to the TLS1850 — partially offsetting the ES66FB's higher purchase price over multi-year ownership.
AS Small AquaFalls™ vs. AT Mini AquaFalls™ — Why the Filter Upgrade Matters
Both filters are in the EasyPro Pro-Series AquaFalls line, but they serve different pond capacities. The AT Mini AquaFalls (used in ET Mini kits) has a single rear 1.5" inlet, an 18"×24"×18" tub, and handles ponds up to 1,200 gallons. The AS Small AquaFalls in this kit has a much larger 26"×26"×26" tub, an 18" spillway opening, two 2" side inlets for flexible routing, and handles ponds up to 2,500 gallons. For a 400-gallon pond, the AS gives you over 6× the headroom — meaning heavier fish stocking, seasonal debris loads, and high-summer organic loads won't push the filter beyond its capacity. The AS also has two inlet options, which simplifies plumbing routing on irregular pond shapes.
Installation Tips for the ES66FB
- Location: Avoid low spots where runoff collects. 4–6 hours of sun supports aquatic plants. Position the AS AquaFalls at the highest point of your excavation — the spillway waterfall height will equal the distance between the top of the filter and your pond surface.
- Excavation: Dig a plant shelf 8–10" deep around the perimeter, then excavate the center to 18"–24". The 10'×10' liner gives you plenty of overlap to berm the edges and conceal the AS filter housing.
- AS AquaFalls placement: Unlike the AT Mini which has a single rear inlet, the AS has two 2" side inlets — use whichever side aligns with your plumbing run and plug the other with the included plug. The 1.5" flex PVC from the PSMFB skimmer connects to the 2" inlet via the included reducing adapter.
- Bio-media: Fill the AS AquaFalls media bags with bio-balls or lava rock before plumbing. The filter ships with filter pads only. A 400-gallon pond with moderate fish stocking needs at least 1–2 cubic feet of bio-media.
- Bacteria at startup: Add the included beneficial bacteria at fill and weekly for the first 4–6 weeks. This seeds the AS AquaFalls and jumpstarts the nitrogen cycle — with bacteria included, you have a meaningful head start over the ET Mini kit.
- Waterfall foam: Use the included black foam to seal the liner fold at the AS AquaFalls entry point before filling. It cures in 30 minutes — fill only after it sets.
- LED lights: Place the LED2K rock lights along the AS AquaFalls spillway or on the pond floor for uplighting. Each light has a 15' cord with quick-connect plug — connect all three to the MT10 10W transformer and plug into a GFCI outlet.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is included in the EasyPro ES66FB Kit?
The ES66FB includes: Pro-Series PSMFB skimmer with filter brushes, Pro-Series small AquaFalls™ (AS) biological filter base, energy-efficient submersible pump (3-year warranty), 10'×10' DuraLiner™ 45-mil EPDM liner, liner underlayment, 1.5"×25' flexible PVC pipe, check valve assembly and fittings, LED2K lighting kit (3 mini LED lights + 45W transformer), beneficial bacteria, WIK waterfall installation kit (PVC glue, primer, silicone, black foam), and instruction manual.
Not included: Filter media (purchase separately for PSMFB and AquaFalls AS). Rocks, gravel, and plants.
Can I keep koi in a 400-gallon pond?
A 400-gallon pond is below the recommended minimum for adult koi. Industry standard is 1,000 gallons minimum for a single koi, with 250 gallons per additional fish. Adult koi typically reach 12–18 inches and require significant filtration capacity and water volume for health.
The ES66FB is an excellent choice for goldfish, comet goldfish, shubunkins, and small ornamental fish — all of which thrive at lower volumes and produce proportionally less waste. For koi, the EasyPro EL1116 (1,250 gallons) is the minimum recommended starting point.
What is the AquaFalls™ AS filter and how does it provide biological filtration?
The Pro-Series small AquaFalls™ (AS series) is EasyPro's biological waterfall filter — the primary biological filtration unit in the ES66FB system. Water pumped from the skimmer enters the AquaFalls, passes through biological filter media (purchased separately), and flows over the molded rock-lip spillway back into the pond as a waterfall.
The filter media provides surface area for nitrifying bacteria colonies that convert toxic ammonia (fish waste) to nitrite to harmless nitrate. The larger the surface area of media, the more biological filtration capacity. Common media for the AS filter: Matala filter pad (various densities), lava rock, or bio-balls. Ask us at (765) 508-4352 for media recommendations based on your stocking plan.
Important: The AquaFalls™ is EasyPro's own biological filter — distinct from BioFalls® (Aquascape's product). Both accomplish the same biological filtration function but are different products from different manufacturers and are not interchangeable.
Why do I need a skimmer if I have a biological filter?
The PSMFB skimmer and AquaFalls™ AS filter each perform different filtration functions:
- PSMFB Skimmer (mechanical filtration): Sits at the pond surface and uses a weir to skim floating debris — leaves, pollen, insects, foam — before it sinks and decomposes into the pond bottom. Its filter brushes catch larger suspended particles before they reach the pump impeller. This is first-stage, physical debris removal.
- AquaFalls™ AS (biological filtration): Contains the biological filter media where beneficial bacteria colonies live and process dissolved fish waste (ammonia) into non-toxic compounds. This is second-stage, chemical/biological water purification.
Together, they form a complete two-stage system: mechanical debris removal (skimmer) + biological waste processing (AquaFalls). Running the pump continuously circulates water through both stages continuously.
How hard is the installation for a beginner?
The ES66FB is EasyPro's smallest Pro-Series pond kit — a manageable beginner build. Basic steps:
- Excavate the 6'×6' basin (2 feet deep in center with graduated shelves at perimeter)
- Position the PSMFB skimmer flush with the pond edge; position the AquaFalls filter at the waterfall end
- Lay underlayment, then the 10'×10' liner, tucking edges into the skimmer and AquaFalls baseplate
- Install pump in skimmer housing; connect 1.5"×25' PVC pipe from pump to AquaFalls
- Apply waterfall foam sealant, add decorative rocks and gravel, fill with water
- Position LED lights, connect to 45W transformer
EasyPro's included instruction manual and video resources cover each step. Most DIY homeowners with basic tool familiarity complete the build in a weekend.
