Description

The EasyPro EX3600 External Low-Head Pond Pump is a 3,600 GPH, 1/8 HP, 139-watt continuous-duty centrifugal pump designed for koi ponds, external pond filters, and low-head waterfall applications up to 12 ft of vertical lift. The weatherproof motor runs continuously outdoors without additional weather protection, and the compact 21 lb design fits in standard pump vaults. At only 1.4 amps, operating cost is approximately $146/year at average electricity rates. Important: The EX3600 is NOT self-priming and must be installed in flooded suction configuration or with a check valve on the suction line. 2” inlet / 1½” outlet. 8 ft power cord. 18-Month Limited Warranty. 115V fixed voltage (cannot be field-converted to 230V).

EX3600 | 3,600 GPH | 1/8 HP | 139W | 1.4A 2" Inlet / 1½" Outlet | 12 ft Max Head | 8 ft Cord Weatherproof | Continuous Duty | Low-Head External ⚠️ NOT SELF-PRIMING — Flooded Suction or Check Valve Required

Why Choose the EasyPro EX3600 External Low-Head Pump?

  • Energy-efficient 1.4-amp draw: At 139 watts and 1.4 amps, the EX3600 delivers 3,600 GPH at a fraction of the operating cost of high-wattage direct-drive submersible pumps. Annual electricity cost at typical rates: approximately $146/year (24/7 operation).
  • Weatherproof continuous-duty motor: The EX3600’s motor is rated for outdoor installation without additional weather enclosure. Designed for year-round, 24/7 continuous-duty operation in demanding pond environments.
  • External design — longer service life: Because the motor is outside the water, it is not exposed to the corrosive, mineral-laden environment that shortens submersible pump motor life. External centrifugal pumps typically outlast submersible pumps of equivalent power.
  • Quiet operation: EasyPro describes the EX Series as “super quiet” — the external motor produces less vibration and acoustic noise than comparable submersible units when properly mounted.
  • 2” inlet / 1½” outlet: The larger 2” inlet reduces suction head loss; the 1½” outlet provides optimized discharge velocity. Inlet is 2” female thread; outlet is 1½” female thread.
  • Compact and lightweight: At 21 lbs, the EX3600 fits in standard pond pump vaults and equipment boxes without requiring industrial-scale mounting infrastructure.
Low-head application only: The EX3600 has a maximum head of 12 ft. It is specifically engineered for low-head applications — koi ponds, external filters, and waterfalls with minimal vertical lift. For installations requiring more than 12 ft of head, consider the EX4500 or EX6100 models. For head heights over 20 ft, consult a pond professional for appropriate pump selection.

Technical Specifications

Specification Detail
Model EasyPro EX3600
Pump Type External low-head centrifugal, continuous duty

Warranty 18-Month Limited Warranty
Critical installation requirement: The EX3600 is NOT self-priming. It must be installed in one of two ways: (1) Flooded suction — pump body at or below pond water level so water gravity-feeds continuously into the pump, OR (2) with a check valve on the suction line and a priming pot/strainer basket near the pump to retain prime between cycles. Failure to do either will result in the pump losing prime, running dry, and potentially failing. See FAQ for full installation guidance.

EasyPro EX Series External Low-Head Pump Family

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the primary benefits of an EX3600 external pump vs a submersible pump?

External centrifugal pumps like the EX3600 offer several advantages over submersible pumps:

  • Motor longevity: The motor never contacts pond water, eliminating the corrosive and mineral exposure that shortens submersible motor life.
  • Accessibility: External pumps are in a dry, accessible location for cleaning, maintenance, and winterization — no reaching into the pond.
  • Energy efficiency: At 139W and 1.4A, the EX3600 delivers 3,600 GPH at one of the lowest wattage-to-flow ratios in its class.
  • Continuous duty: Weatherproof housing allows permanent outdoor installation without protection from weather or seasonal removal.

Trade-off: Unlike submersible pumps, the EX3600 is not self-priming. It requires flooded suction installation or a check valve and priming pot. Plan your pump vault or equipment area accordingly.

How energy-efficient is the EX3600, and what is the amp draw?

The EX3600 draws 1.4 amps at 115V, consuming 139 watts. This is one of the most efficient external centrifugal pumps at 3,600 GPH:

  • Annual electricity cost: approximately $146/year running 24/7 at $0.12/kWh
  • Circuit requirements: 1.4A fits comfortably on any standard 15A outdoor GFCI circuit
  • Horsepower: 1/8 HP
What size plumbing should I use with the EX3600 for maximum flow?

The EX3600 has a 2-inch inlet (female thread) and a 1½-inch outlet (female thread).

  • Suction line (inlet): Use 2” pipe or hose on the suction side — matching the pump’s 2” inlet port. Reducing the suction line below 2” significantly increases friction loss and reduces prime reliability.
  • Discharge line (outlet): Use 1½” or 2” flexible PVC pipe on the discharge side. A reducer fitting at the outlet transitions from the 1½” thread to larger pipe if needed.
  • Maintain straight runs where possible on the suction side to minimize head loss.
Does the EasyPro EX3600 require a leaf strainer or priming pot?

This depends on your installation configuration:

Important first: The EX3600 is NOT self-priming. You must choose one of two installation approaches:

  • Flooded suction: Install the pump body at or below the pond water surface level so water gravity-fills the pump at all times. In this configuration, a basic suction strainer on the intake is sufficient for debris protection.
  • Above-water installation: If the pump must be located above the water level, you must install a check valve on the suction line (to hold water in the line when the pump stops) AND a priming pot/strainer basket close to the pump. Without both, the pump will lose prime when stopped and cannot restart without manual re-priming.

A leaf strainer basket is recommended in either configuration to prevent debris from reaching the impeller and to facilitate priming on startup.

What is the maximum head pressure for this model?

The EasyPro EX3600 has a maximum shut-off head of 12 feet. This is an external low-head pump — it is specifically engineered for applications with minimal vertical lift, such as pond circulation, external filter return, and gentle low-elevation waterfall features.

At 12 ft it delivers zero flow (shut-off point). For practical waterfall sizing, the working head should stay under 8 ft to maintain meaningful flow. For installations requiring more than 12 ft of head, the EX4500 or EX6100 are more appropriate choices.

What is the warranty on the EasyPro EX3600?

The EasyPro EX3600 carries an 18-month limited warranty from date of purchase. This warranty applies to manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship under normal continuous-duty pond operation.

Note: The EX8800 model carries a 3-year limited warranty. The EX3600, EX4500, and EX6100 all carry the 18-month term. Contact Pond Pro Direct at (765) 508-4352 for warranty service questions.
