- Above-water installation: If the pump must be located above the water level, you must install a check valve on the suction line (to hold water in the line when the pump stops) AND a priming pot/strainer basket close to the pump. Without both, the pump will lose prime when stopped and cannot restart without manual re-priming.
A leaf strainer basket is recommended in either configuration to prevent debris from reaching the impeller and to facilitate priming on startup.
