ASTM D7465 (Type 1) — Why the Standard Matters
Not all EPDM rubber is created equal. Roofing-grade EPDM — commonly available from building supply stores — often contains algaecides, fire retardants, and carbon black additives that are toxic to fish, plants, and aquatic invertebrates. DuraLiner™ meets ASTM D7465 (Type 1), the ASTM International technical standard specifically written for EPDM geomembranes in water containment applications. This standard governs minimum tensile strength, elongation, tear resistance, and chemical safety for pond and water feature use.
Independent testing confirms DuraLiner™ is free from harmful additives. When a professional landscaper, pond contractor, or commercial project specification calls for "ASTM D7465 (Type 1) EPDM liner," this is the product. Produced in an ISO9001-certified facility using first-quality virgin EPDM resins only — no recycled or reclaimed rubber is used in DuraLiner™ production, ensuring consistent thickness and mechanical properties across the full 10'×100' roll.
Is the RPL101 Right for Your Project? Liner Sizing Guide
Standard Pond Liner Sizing Formula
Liner length = pond length + (2 × max depth) + 2 ft overlap
Liner width = pond width + (2 × max depth) + 2 ft overlap
Important — RPL101 width constraint: This roll is 10 feet wide. After accounting for depth and overlap, 10' of liner width accommodates a pond or stream up to approximately 4'–5' wide at 2' depth (10 ft − 4 ft depth allowance − 2 ft overlap = 4 ft finished pond width). For wider ponds, a wider roll is needed — or two rolls can be seamed together using EPDM seam tape and primer.
RPL101 Best Uses (10' Wide Roll)
- Stream and waterfall channels up to ~5'–6' wide × 100' long — the roll's narrow width and 100' length are perfectly matched to long stream builds
- Small-to-medium ponds up to ~4' wide × any length (single piece, no seaming)
- Pond seaming projects — use multiple 10'×100' sections, seamed with EPDM tape, for ponds wider than 10' where wider rolls aren't available
- Commercial water features requiring custom cuts from roll stock
- Retention ponds and landscape water features requiring multiple panels
When to Choose a Wider Roll
- Ponds wider than ~4'–5' at 2' depth: consider RPL151 (15'×100'), RPL205 (20'×50'), or RPL301 (30'×100')
- Large koi ponds 10'×14' or bigger: a 15' or 20' wide roll eliminates the need for a seam in the pond bottom

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the key benefits of the EasyPro RPL101 DuraLiner™?
The EasyPro RPL101 DuraLiner™ is a 10'×100', 45-mil EPDM rubber pond liner produced in an ISO9001-certified facility using first-quality virgin resins. Key technical benefits:
- ASTM D7465 (Type 1) compliant — the ASTM standard for water containment EPDM, distinguishing it from non-certified roofing EPDM that may contain fish-harmful additives
- -40°F to 175°F temperature range — remains flexible in freezing winters and performs in hot climates
- 45-mil thickness — significantly more puncture-resistant than 30-mil or 40-mil liners; industry standard for koi pond and professional water feature construction
- 20-year limited warranty — backed by EasyPro's product guarantee
- Fish and plant friendly — free from algaecides, fire retardants, and harmful additives
- Conformable to any shape — stretches to fit curves, shelves, ledges, and grade changes without tearing
Is the EasyPro DuraLiner™ safe for fish and aquatic plants?
Yes — DuraLiner™ is fish and plant friendly. It is made from EPDM rubber free from algaecides, fire retardants, and chemical additives that could harm aquatic life. This is a key distinction from roofing-grade EPDM, which contains such additives and is not suitable for fish-bearing water features.
EasyPro's DuraLiner™ ASTM D7465 (Type 1) compliance confirms the material meets water containment safety requirements. It is safe for koi, goldfish, native fish, aquatic plants, and visiting wildlife. It is also suitable for aquaponic and water garden applications where water quality is a priority. Note: there is no formal NSF 61 potable water certification for pond liner applications — the fish and plant safety claim is based on EPDM composition and ASTM D7465 compliance, not a separate potable water standard.
Can I seam the RPL101 for wider or larger ponds?
Yes. Multiple sections of DuraLiner™ EPDM can be seamed to cover larger or wider ponds than any single roll can accommodate. Professional seaming procedure:
- Overlap liner sections by at least 6 inches (minimum; 9"–12" recommended for critical installations)
- Clean both surfaces with EPDM cleaner/primer and allow to flash off until tacky (approximately 60 seconds in 70°F conditions; longer in cold weather)
- Apply EPDM seam tape — roll firmly with a hand roller to eliminate air pockets
- Allow seam to cure before filling with water (24 hours minimum in warm conditions)
A properly made EPDM-to-EPDM seam achieves the full tensile strength of the base liner material. For DIY builders, it is advisable to practice the seaming technique on scrap liner material before making a permanent seam in the installed pond. How long does the EasyPro DuraLiner™ last?
The DuraLiner™ is backed by a 20-year limited warranty from EasyPro. With proper installation — including a geotextile protective underlayment, adequate rock coverage over any liner exposed to direct sunlight, and no mechanical damage during installation — 45-mil EPDM pond liners have a documented service life well in excess of 20 years in professional water feature installations.
Factors that extend liner life: underlayment protection from sharp substrate, rock or gravel coverage over UV-exposed liner edges, no foot traffic on the liner surface, and installation in ambient temperatures above 50°F (allowing the liner to relax and conform without installation stress). Factors that reduce liner life: direct sun exposure without rock coverage, installation damage from sharp tools, and improper seaming.
Does this liner require underlayment, and does it affect the warranty?
We strongly recommend installing a geotextile underlayment beneath the DuraLiner™ on all substrate types. The underlayment protects the liner from puncture by sharp rocks, roots, glass, and debris that can work their way up through soil over time. It also provides a cushioning layer that helps the liner conform to irregular substrate contours.
EasyPro's warranty documentation notes that underlayment is recommended as part of proper installation. Review the warranty certificate included with your liner for the specific terms. We carry matching EasyPro geotextile underlayment rolls in compatible widths — contact us to confirm the correct underlayment SKU for your RPL101 installation.
What is the difference between EPDM and PVC pond liners?
The two liner types differ significantly in long-term outdoor performance:
- EPDM (DuraLiner™): Synthetic rubber with high inherent UV resistance, elasticity across -40°F to 175°F, and a documented 20+ year outdoor service life. Conforms easily to irregular shapes. Heavier (~35 lbs/100 sq ft) but far more durable outdoors.
- PVC: Thermoplastic liner that is lighter and lower-cost initially. However, PVC becomes brittle and susceptible to cracking when UV-exposed over time, particularly at cold temperatures. PVC plasticizers can leach from the liner over time, reducing flexibility. Typical outdoor service life is significantly shorter than EPDM.
For any pond or water feature intended to last more than 5 years with minimal liner replacement, 45-mil EPDM is the professional standard. The higher upfront cost is offset by the 20-year warranty and elimination of early liner replacement costs.
Installation Best Practices
- Install above 50°F ambient: EPDM becomes stiffer in cold weather. Allow the liner to warm and relax before final positioning to minimize installation stress creases at seams and folds.
- Always use underlayment: Even on apparently smooth, sandy soil, install geotextile underlayment first. Roots and rock fragments migrate upward over time.
- Oversize slightly: Add 2+ feet of overlap on every edge to allow for adjustment during installation. Excess can be trimmed after final positioning.
- Protect edges: Cover all liner edges above the waterline with stone, mortar, or berm material to prevent UV degradation at exposed edges.
- For freight delivery: Have 2–3 people and a pallet jack or dolly available at delivery. The ~350 lb roll cannot be moved by one person on a residential driveway.
