How the EazyPod Complete Works
Water from the pond is pumped by your separately purchased circulation pump through the filter inlet. As it enters, water cascades over the 18W UV-C bulb mounted in the inlet section -- any single-celled algae is exposed to UV radiation, causing the algae cells to clump together (flocculate). The water then flows into the outer chamber, circulating around the stainless steel perforated screen. Many larger solids settle to the base of the outer chamber due to gravity -- this is the first stage of mechanical filtration.
Water then passes through the screen perforations into the inner chamber, where it flows through the static bed of K1 Micro media. Fine solids are trapped in the densely packed K1 Micro, which simultaneously supports an established colony of nitrifying bacteria on its protected surface area -- processing ammonia and nitrite into harmless nitrate. Clean water rises and overflows into the return pipe, flowing back to the pond by gravity.
Important: The K1 Micro must remain completely static during normal filtration. If the media moves during normal water flow (not during cleaning), all trapped debris will be returned to the pond. Only during the air-driven cleaning cycle -- initiated manually using the Air Pump 70 -- should the K1 Micro be agitated.

Recommended System Setup
For a 10,000-litre (2,640 US gal) koi pond using the EazyPod Complete as the primary filter:
- Pond circulation pump (required, sold separately): Evolution Aqua Varipump 10000 -- variable flow, 5,000–10,000 LPH. Set at 5,000 LPH for optimal K1 Micro solids capture. The Varipump's adjustable flow lets you reduce turnover in winter when koi metabolism slows.
- Biological cycling (recommended): Add Evolution Aqua PURE Pond Bomb to seed the new K1 Micro with beneficial bacteria -- dramatically reduces the time to establish a full nitrogen cycle from several weeks to a few days.
- Pre-filter (optional): An Evolution Aqua Cetus Sieve or bottom drain vortex chamber as a pre-filter reduces the solids load on the EazyPod, extending cleaning intervals and improving water quality for high-stocking koi ponds.
Maintenance Guide
Routine Cleaning (every 2-4 weeks)
- Connect Air Pump 70 to filter air line
- Run air pump for 5 minutes to agitate K1 Micro
- Open 1.5" waste slide valve to flush settled debris
- Close waste valve; resume normal operation
- Never agitate K1 Micro during normal water flow
Annual Maintenance
- Replace 18W PL-L UV-C bulb every spring before koi season starts -- bulb loses UV effectiveness after ~6,000-8,000 hours even if it still lights up
- Inspect stainless steel screen for mineral buildup -- clean with dilute vinegar if clogged
- Check all hose connections for weeping or mineral scale
- Re-register warranty at evolutionaqua.com if applicable
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the EazyPod Complete different from the standard EazyPod?
The EazyPod Complete adds two key inclusions over the standard EazyPod:
- Integrated 18W UV-C clarifier built into the inlet section -- controls green water algae without a separate UV unit
- EA Air Pump 70 kit (70 L/min air pump + airline, manifold, and accessories) -- included for cleaning cycles
The standard EazyPod has neither the UV nor the air pump included. The EazyPod Air adds the Air Pump 70 but no UV. The EazyPod Automatic adds an automated cleaning timer. All models use 18 litres of K1 Micro and are rated for koi ponds up to 10,000 litres (2,640 US gallons).
Important note for all models: The pond circulation pump that feeds water to the filter is not included with any EazyPod model. You need a separately purchased pump (minimum 5,000 LPH recommended).
What pond size can the EazyPod Complete filter?
The EazyPod Complete is rated for:
- Koi ponds: 10,000 litres / 2,640 US gallons at a recommended maximum daily feed rate of 100–125g
- Ornamental/goldfish ponds: 20,000 litres / 5,280 US gallons (lighter biological load)
For heavily stocked koi ponds, or ponds fed more than 125g/day, consider a second EazyPod in series, or a larger Nexus filter. The EazyPod performs best when the pond is turned over once every two hours -- a 5,000 LPH pump on a 10,000L pond achieves exactly this.
Why is K1 Micro better than traditional foam or sponge media?
K1 Micro (9mm, designed and manufactured by Evolution Aqua in the UK) outperforms foam and sponge media in several ways:
- Surface area: K1 Micro has 950 m²/m³ of protected surface area -- shielded inside the plastic body structure where it cannot be cleaned away. Traditional sponge has much lower effective surface area and loses bacteria during cleaning.
- Self-sustaining colony: Bacteria in K1 Micro's protected channels survive the cleaning cycle, reforming their colony quickly. Foam sponges must be cleaned carefully to avoid destroying the bacterial colony.
- No replacement cost: K1 Micro lasts indefinitely -- you never buy replacement sponges. Evolution Aqua estimates sponge filter media can cost over $300 in replacements over a filter's lifetime.
- Dual function: Static K1 Micro traps fine mechanical particles while simultaneously providing biological colonization -- a single media performing two filter stages.
Can the EazyPod Complete be installed gravity-fed?
No -- the EazyPod Complete is pump-fed installation only. The integrated UV-C clarifier is designed for pump-fed water flow through the inlet UV section.
In a pump-fed setup: your pond circulation pump feeds water from the pond to the EazyPod inlet. Filtered water returns to the pond by gravity -- down a waterfall, stream, or through a large-diameter return pipe. The return outlet must be positioned above the pond water level to allow gravity return.
If you need gravity-fed installation (bottom drain into filter, filter pump returning water to pond), consider the standard EazyPod model (without UV), which can be modified for gravity-fed use.
How does the UV clarifier control green water?
The 18W UV-C bulb is mounted in the EazyPod Complete's inlet section. As pond water enters, it flows over the UV lamp -- single-celled green water algae cells are exposed to UV-C radiation, which damages their DNA and causes them to clump together (flocculate). The clumped algae then passes into the filter chambers where the K1 Micro traps the larger clumps mechanically.
UV maintenance: The 18W PL-L bulb must be replaced annually every spring. After approximately 6,000–8,000 hours of operation, the bulb loses its UV output even though it may still illuminate visibly. Running an ineffective UV bulb will allow green water to return. Replacement 18W PL-L bulbs are available from Evolution Aqua.
How do I clean the EazyPod Complete?
The cleaning cycle is entirely air-driven using the included EA Air Pump 70 -- you never need to open the filter or touch the K1 Micro media.
- Ensure the pond circulation pump is running normally (K1 Micro must be static during this step while you prepare)
- Switch OFF the pond circulation pump to stop water flow through the filter
- Connect or activate the Air Pump 70 -- air agitates the K1 Micro for 5 minutes, releasing trapped debris into the outer chamber
- Open the 1.5" waste slide valve to drain settled waste to your waste outlet
- Close waste valve; switch pond circulation pump back ON
- Full cycle takes under 10 minutes with no physical media contact
Critical: Never allow the K1 Micro to move during normal operation (pump running, filter in use). Movement during normal running releases all captured debris back into the pond. Agitation is for cleaning cycles only.
