Description

The Evolution Aqua Varipump 20000 (VP20) is a professional-grade, electronically adjustable pond pump delivering up to 5,280 GPH with an 18-foot maximum head. Powered by a quiet six-pole, three-phase motor with sinusoidal wave technology, the VP20 runs at near-silent levels at any flow setting — a key advantage for koi keepers and discerning backyard pond enthusiasts alike. A wired digital controller adjusts output from 0% to 100% in 1% increments and displays live wattage so you know exactly how much power you're using at any given moment.

The VP20 is uniquely versatile: it can be installed fully submerged in the pond or set up as an external dry-mount pump — making it the standard pump recommendation for the Evolution Aqua Nexus 320 gravity-fed filter system and similar gravity-return filtration setups. At full power it draws 190 watts; throttle it back for winter low-flow maintenance or to reduce waterfall noise, and energy use drops proportionally.

5,280 GPH Max 18 ft Max Head 190W Variable 115V / 60 Hz 2" MPT Outlet Submersible or External 6-Pole 3-Phase Motor 2-Year Warranty
⚠ IMPORTANT — Water & Electrical Safety: This pump must be plugged into a properly grounded, GFCI-protected 120V outlet. Not approved for use in swimming pools or salt water. Do NOT submerse the controller. If installing externally, the pump must be set up as a flooded-suction system — the pump body must remain below the pond water level at all times. The built-in thermal protector will shut down the motor if it detects water loss or blockage, but this is a safety failsafe — the pump should never be run dry.

Key Features & Benefits

🎛️
Full Electronic Flow Control
Adjust output from 0–100% in 1% increments via the wired controller. Live wattage display shows real-time energy use — no guessing.
🔇
Near-Silent Six-Pole Motor
Six-pole, three-phase asynchronous motor with sinusoidal wave technology runs noticeably quieter than standard single-phase pumps at equivalent flow rates.
🔄
Submersible or External
Unique dual-installation design: run fully submerged in the pond, or mount externally as a flooded-suction pump — ideal for Nexus 320 and gravity-fed filter setups.
Energy-Efficient Variable Power
190W at full power — but dial it back and energy use drops proportionally. Run at 50% for winter maintenance at a fraction of full operating cost.
🛡️
Dry-Run Thermal Protection
Built-in thermal protector automatically shuts down the motor if water loss or blockage is detected — protecting the pump from accidental dry-run damage.
↕️
Horizontal or Vertical Mount
Can be installed in the standard horizontal position or vertically — unusual flexibility that makes it easier to fit in tight pump chambers or sumps.

Installation Overview

Option A — Submersible: Place the pump fully submerged in the pond or pump chamber. Connect the 2" MPT outlet to your filtration return or waterfall plumbing using the included step-down hosetails. The pump can be positioned horizontally or vertically.
Option B — External Dry-Mount (Flooded-Suction): The VP20 can be installed outside the pond in a dry chamber. The pump body must be positioned below the pond's water level so water gravity-feeds to the pump inlet at all times. This is the recommended setup for the Evolution Aqua Nexus 320 and similar gravity-fed filter systems. Do not attempt self-priming — the VP20 is not a self-priming pump.
  • Use the widest practical hose diameter for inlet plumbing to minimize friction loss
  • Remove (saw off) extra step-down sections from hosetails — use only what you need
  • Always use a hose clamp to secure hose to hosetail
  • Do not submerse the controller — mount it in a dry location
  • Plug into a GFCI-protected 120V grounded outlet
  • Use the controller to set initial flow at 50% and increase gradually to desired output
  • Seasonally reduce flow in winter by dialing down the controller — no separate bypass needed

Ideal Applications

  • Evolution Aqua Nexus 320 filter systems — the VP20 is the standard recommended pump for this filter in gravity-fed configurations
  • Large koi pond filtration returns (1,000–5,000+ gallon ponds)
  • Gravity-fed drum filter and bead filter setups
  • Medium to large waterfalls and streams where flow adjustment is desired
  • Pond circulation upgrades where energy efficiency is a priority
  • Systems where seasonal flow reduction is needed without secondary pump installation

Recommended Pairings

  • Evolution Aqua Nexus 320 — gravity-fed biological filter; VP20 is the primary pump recommendation
  • Evolution Aqua EazyPod — combined mechanical/biological filter, pump-fed or gravity-fed
  • Evolution Aqua Surge Filter with UV — pump-fed pressurized filter (use at VP20's optimum flow range)
  • UV clarifiers for green water control on large koi ponds
  • Ball valves and unions on outlet plumbing for easy seasonal maintenance access

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the performance range of the Varipump 20000?

The VP20 delivers a maximum flow of 5,280 GPH with a maximum head height of 18 feet. The digital controller adjusts power from 0% to 100% in 1% increments — at full power the pump draws 190 watts. Dial it back and wattage (and flow) reduce proportionally. The controller’s live wattage display lets you see exactly how much energy you’re using at any setting.

Can this pump be installed externally (out of the pond)?

Yes. The VP20 supports both submersible and external flooded-suction installation. For external use, the pump body must be positioned below the pond’s water level at all times — this allows the pond to gravity-feed water to the pump inlet. The pump is not self-priming. This makes the VP20 an ideal pairing for the Evolution Aqua Nexus 320 gravity-fed filter and similar gravity-return systems where the pump sits in a dry external chamber below the pond water line.

How does the digital controller work?

The included wired digital controller adjusts pump output in 1% increments from 0% to 100%. At each setting, the controller displays the live wattage draw — so you’re never guessing about energy consumption. This makes it easy to fine-tune your waterfall display, reduce flow during winter months to maintain biological filter activity without full turnover, or match pump output precisely to your filter’s rated flow requirements.

What safety protections are built in?

The VP20 includes an integrated thermal protector that automatically shuts down the motor if it detects a blockage or loss of water — preventing damage from accidental dry running. However, the pump should never be intentionally run without water; the thermal protector is a failsafe, not a primary operating mode. The pump must be connected to a GFCI-protected 120V grounded outlet. Do not submerse the controller — mount it in a dry, protected location.

What are the plumbing connection sizes?

The VP20 features a 2” MPT (male threaded) discharge connection. Included step-down hosetails allow connection to flexible pond hose in approximately 1”, 1-1/4”, and 1-1/2” sizes (25/32/38mm). For maximum flow and minimum friction loss, use the largest practical hose diameter and saw off only the step-down sections you don’t need. A hose clamp should always be used to secure hose to hosetail.

What warranty does the Varipump 20000 carry?

The Evolution Aqua Varipump 20000 is backed by a 2-Year Manufacturer’s Limited Warranty from Evolution Aqua. As an authorized Evolution Aqua dealer, Pond Pro Direct supports this warranty. Contact us at support@pondprodirect.com or (765) 508-4352 with any warranty questions.
