The Oase FiltoClear 3400 is rated for ponds up to 3,400 gallons with a decorative/water garden fish load (few fish, lighter bioload). For moderate goldfish populations, the rating drops to 1,700 gallons. For koi ponds — where fish bioload is significantly higher — the maximum is 850 gallons.
When in doubt about your fish load, size up. The FiltoClear 5200 (SKU 91670) handles 5,200 gal decorative / 1,300 gal koi, and the FiltoClear 8200 (SKU 91671) handles 8,200 gal decorative / 2,050 gal koi. Over-filtering is always better than under-filtering for fish health.
How does the 3rd Gen Easy-Clean technology work?
Cleaning the FiltoClear 3400 takes approximately 30 seconds and requires no tools, no opened lid, and no contact with dirty foam:
- Step 1: Turn the 2-way valve handle from the filter position to the waste/backflush position.
- Step 2: Slowly pull the integrated cleaning handle. This compresses the internal foam layers, squeezing accumulated debris out of the foams and directing the dirty water to waste (a garden bed or drain).
- Step 3: Return the handle, turn the valve back to the filter position. Done.
The bypass technology built into the 3rd Gen design maintains constant water circulation through the system during the cleaning cycle, keeping the beneficial bacteria colony oxygenated and alive throughout the process.
What pump flow rate is recommended for this filter?
For best results, Oase recommends pairing the FiltoClear 3400 with the Oase AquaMax Eco Classic 1900 or the Oase AquaMax Eco Premium 2500 — both deliver appropriate flow rates within the filter’s operating range.
The FiltoClear 3400 has a maximum flow rate of 2,400 GPH and is designed for pumps with a maximum input head pressure of 17 feet (7.25 psi). Do not pair with high-pressure waterfall pumps (such as the Oase Waterfall Pump series) — these exceed the filter’s input pressure rating and may damage the filter housing.
Because the FiltoClear is a pressurized filter, it can deliver filtered water back to a waterfall or stream up to 7 feet above the filter outlet (2.9 psi max output). For waterfall heights greater than 7 feet, a separate return pump from the pond is recommended.
Can I replace the UV bulb while the filter is running?
Yes. The 3rd Gen FiltoClear design allows you to replace the 24-watt UV lamp without shutting down the pump, keeping water flowing and bacteria oxygenated throughout the process.
Important: the FiltoClear 3400 uses a 24-watt UV lamp. When ordering a replacement, confirm you are ordering the 24W bulb — not the 42W, which is the replacement for the larger FiltoClear 5200. The UV indicator window on the filter lid allows you to verify the lamp is operating correctly at any time without opening the unit.
Oase recommends replacing the UV lamp annually, even if it still appears to glow. UV output degrades significantly before visible light output does, and a degraded lamp provides false confidence while algae control diminishes.
Can the FiltoClear 3400 be buried in the ground?
Yes — the impact-resistant housing can be buried in the ground up to the clamping ring, leaving only the top controls, UV inspection window, and cleaning handle visible above ground.
Important: “Buried to the clamping ring” means buried in soil, not submerged in water. This filter is NOT submersible — do not place it in a pond or submerge it in any body of water.
For a fully concealed installation, add the optional Oase FiltoCap (sold separately), which camouflages the visible top portion as a natural-looking rock formation in your landscape. The FiltoCap is designed specifically for the FiltoClear housing dimensions.
